Thanksgiving is a very special American holiday. It`s a time of family meetings, special meals and a time to offer thanks.
It`s celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.
In New York there is a parade along Broadway, with pop stars, TV stars and big balloons with cartoon characters.
It all started in 1620. The pilgrims sailed to North America on a ship called the Mayflower. The first months in America were difficult, but the harvest in October was successful and they had lots of food for the winter. They had new homes and they were at peace with the Indians.
The pilgrims had a lot to celebrate, so they invited the Indians for the first Thanksgiving meal. Nowadays, people celebrate the holiday with family and friends. They usually eat turkey, corn bread and pumpkin pie.
